You can’t miss it! It’s everywhere… all over our planet. It makes people, other animals and plants sick or even kills them. It’s even making the climate change. It’s Pollution! All Year 5 children created a poster with the title ‘Auntie Pollution’ (Antipollution). The kids’ desire is to make all people and children visiting our school aware that we humans are the cause of such pollution and we have to try to stop it now before it’s too late!

The Passenger Pigeon

This is an article related to the WayAhead 4 Chapter 9.

A passenger pigeon – a migratory bird hunted to extinction by man. Billions of these birds inhabited eastern North America in the early 1800s;   migrating flocks darkened the skies for days. As settlers pressed westward, however, passenger pigeons were slaughtered(killed) by the million yearly and shipped by railway carloads for sale in city markets. From 1870 the decline of the species became precipitous, and it became officially classified as extinct when the last known representative died on Sept. 1, 1914, in the Cincinnati (Ohio) Zoo.

Giving directions is an important skill and one that many students will surely be able to use in real life. This was the main objective for the lesson delivered by Mr. Etienne Vella to his Year 5 class at Gozo College Għajnsielem Primary.  An actual map of Ghajnsielem centre was created specifically for this lesson.   The map is a 7 by 11 grid  (2 m by 1.10m), designed so that each square represents one Bee-Bot step.  The first part of the lesson was delivered  in class where the children were introduced to 7 directional phrases (Go straight along…Street,  Turn left at…Street, Turn right at…Street,  It’s on the left, It’s on the right,   It’s opposite the …,   It’s next to the….) The main resources for this part were two Interactive Power Point Presentations.  During the second and main part of the lesson (related to the map activity) children had to choose a card with different questions eg: ‘Excuse me. Where is the Post Office please?’  Children had to answer these questions orally and then move the Bee-Bot to the right direction on the map.  Children themselves enjoyed asking questions to each other, answering questions and giving directions to the Bee-Bot.  This was an enjoyable activity which was also related to the Way Ahead 4 – Chapter 3. The interactive whiteboard and the class computers were used for the final part of the lesson.
